Selling Your Fish to Pond & Lake Management Companies Workshop
January 29, 2016 - 9:00 a.m. - Noon
Quest Conference Center
Selling Your Fish to Pond & Lake Management Companies
The Ohio Aquaculture Association (OAA) is pleased to invite you to attend a special workshop designed to enhance your ability to sell high quality, locally grown fish to pond & lake management companies for eventual stocking into Ohio’s large number of private ponds and lakes. This workshop is in response to requests by these companies to increase the availability of Ohio grown fish for purchase as well as fish culturists looking for additional markets to sell their fish.
Presently, the vast majority of fish stocked in Ohio private waters come from out-of-state, costing Ohio’s pond & lake management companies a considerable expense in shipping costs. Purchasing Ohio grown fish for stocking will be a win-win scenario for both groups. The workshop will provide information to attendees on:
- Species and sizes of interest to pond & lake management companies based on a survey sent to such companies;
- Expectations of both the companies purchasing fish as well expectations of the seller;
- Understanding fish stress and the major causes of stress during harvesting, grading etc.;
- BMP’s for minimizing stress and injury;
- Infrastructure needs reduce stress and meet the purchaser’s expectations;
- Effective communication strategies between purchasers and sellers.
Bill Lynch, OAA President and Owner of Millcreek Perch Farm LLC, will teach the workshop and enlighten attendees on how his yellow perch farm successfully sells various sizes of yellow perch to pond & lake management companies in Ohio as well as neighboring states. Several of Ohio’s management companies will be present to participate in the presentations, provide their insight, answer questions, and network with growers over potential purchases in the upcoming year.
The three hour workshop will be held on Friday morning, January 29th, 2016 prior to the 2016 Ohio Aquaculture Conference at the Quest Center in Columbus, Ohio. The workshop will start at 9:00 AM. The cost is $30 for OAA members and $50 for non-OAA members, and includes lunch. Please note that attendance is limited to 80 individuals, so early registration is highly recommended. Attendees can register for the workshop, the 2016 Ohio Aquaculture Conference, and join the OAA by going to the Association’s website, http://ohioaquaculture.org
